Finally, after 24 years of ringing Whooper Swans with Yellow darvic rings (both in Iceland & the UK) we used the last yellow ring & this year started to use Red darvic rings.
This wee guy was the first to have a Red darvic ring fitted!
The things we’ll do to ring birds! Well OK we did really want to get half naked and run around a lake catching swans! We didn’t need much persuading!
Got red-ASB today at East Fenton Farm resr in East Lothian, first red darvic here (22 different yellow darvics in last 5 years, some returning individuals); have full histories (that I know) in Excel sheet: http://www.box.net/shared/8imrxoz18i
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteVery many thanks for letting me know! This is a cygnet that we ringed this year on 01/08/2010 at Husabakkafloi in Skajafjordur. It was a female. I presume you already report these rings to WWT, be incase - could you report it to colourmarkedswans'@'wwt.org.uk so that your record finds it's way into the system.
Thanks once again for taking the time to read & report this ;-)
Kane
Hi Kane, thanks for rapid feedback (quicker than WWT!); female fits as certainly a smaller bird, a poor pic on my blog*, they are feeding on frozen potatoes there, probably also some brassicas in adjacent field. I'll keep a look-out for it and send all records to WWT at end of each season.
